The Department of Anatomy and Physiology has the Department Executive as its peak internal advisory body to the Head of Department.

The Executive is supported by a Committee system that:

• Provides advice to the Executive on academic matters, teaching, and research quality.
• Is  underpinned by a set of principles that seeks to ensure widespread communication, understanding, participation and consensus across the Department.
• Allows stakeholders in the Department to express their views and provide input into policies affecting them whilst they are being developed and alternate solutions considered.
• Seeks promote regular, two-way communication between representatives of stakeholders participating in policy-making and those they represent, and to guarantee that participants in the policy-making process are provided with the appropriate resources and information so that they may participate in a timely fashion.
• Recognises that the primary responsibility for policy-making and decision-making in each area of University life must be clearly designated, and consequently, each committee within the Department is responsible for ensuring that these principles are reflected in their Terms of Reference and otherwise upheld by their operations.

Research Committee

The Department Research Committee’s overarching purpose to provide advice to the Head of Department and Executive Committee on matters pertaining to research-related strategy and the implementation of agreed activities.

Education Committee

The Department of Anatomy and Physiology is deeply committed to the quality of the student experience in our learning and teaching programs to undergraduate students. The Department’s Education Committee’s purpose is to promote collaboration and cooperation on the design, development, delivery and review of all teaching programs within the Department, and to discuss, develop and review policy and procedure in relation to strategic development of teaching programs.

The Education Committee is Chaired by the Director of Education, and membership consists of a Coordinator of each of the four major teaching disciplines within the Department, and Coordinators for each of the integrated teaching approaches.

Research Training Committee

The role of the Research Training Committee is to provide information and advice to the Department and School of Biomedical Sciences on policy matters relating to research training, and to discuss, review and develop department policy and procedure in relation to research training. The remit of the Committee applies to all research training programs within the Department of Anatomy and Physiology.

The Research Training Committee is Chaired by the Director of the Research Training and membership consists of each of the Coordinators responsible for research training across the Department.

Each role will provide leadership in advancing the quality of research training within the Department. The portfolio is expansive, and activities include, but are not limited to:

• Academic and professional development for research higher degree (RHD) students and early career researchers (ECRs);
• Initiate and implement improvement processes and policy that enhances the student and ECR experience, and adds value to their qualifications;
• Contribute to resolving conflicts, complaints and formal grievances that might arise in the context of HDR supervision

Specific responsibilities include:

PhD Coordinator (dual appointment on the School of Biomedical Sciences Research Training Committee) & PhD Deputy Coordinator oversee the progress of PhD researchers, both formally, in the context of chairing the advisory committee and progress meetings (including confirmation of candidature), and by providing advice, support, and pastoral care more generally. Supervise the establishment of other advisory committees and ensuring consistency of their function. Provide information and advice to the Department Research Training Committee and Department Executive on issues, policy developments, and forward planning in relation to the PhD program.

Masters of Biomedical Science Coordinator (dual appointment on the School of Biomedical Sciences Research Training Committee) and Masters of Biomedical Science Deputy Coordinator oversee the progress of Masters researchers, providing advice, support, and pastoral care. In addition to ensuring adherence to policy and process, the Coordinators work as needed on sub-committees’ to provide advice to implement new courses that would enhance the overall student experience and will add value to their qualifications.

The Honours Coordinators provide oversight on the progress of Honours students providing advice, support, and pastoral care, and liaising with members within and external to the Department to ensure alignment and delivery of BIOM40001 and ANAT40002 content and assessment.
