An inclusive culture for women in STEMM

Here in the School of Biomedical Sciences we are committed to advancing gender equity.

Over 85% of Australian universities have signed up to the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) initiative and are working towards eliminating systemic and cultural barriers to gender equity and diversity.

This year the University of Melbourne was awarded an Athena SWAN Bronze Award from SAGE recognizing its ongoing commitment to improve gender diversity, intention to increase the number of women in senior leadership positions, and in promoting an inclusive culture for women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM) disciplines.

Aligned with this commitment are the School of Biomedical Sciences' initiatives including the Early-Mid Career Researchers Association (EMCRA) and the Georgina Sweet and MJ Gething Award programs. You can find out more below.

EMCRA

The Early-Mid Career Researchers Association (EMCRA) was formed to promote research independence of the brilliant and talented postdoctoral researchers in the School of Biomedical Sciences. A key initiative is the EMCRA Collaborative Award an inter-department collaborative seed-funding grant. Applications for this award will open in June 2020. Read more.

MJ Gething Award

The grant aims to help early career researchers with significant caring responsibilities to maintain research momentum or build their research profile. Applications are being accepted throughout the year until November. Read more.

Georgina Sweet Award for Women in Quantitative Biomedical Science

Up to three awards of $25,000 are made each year to Australian female researchers who demonstrate excellence in the area of quantitative biomedical science. Read more.
