The Department of Microbiology and Immunology includes a number of shared research facilities, as well as several research services open to researchers external to the University of Melbourne on a fee for service basis.

Microscopy
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology has facilities for light and epifluorescent, confocal and multi-photon microscopy, as well as tissue sectioning. The confocal microscopes are part of the Biological Optical Microscopy Platform (BOMP). Training is essential before any of these instruments can be used.

Media Preparation Unit
The Media Preparation Unit provides an enormous range of media for the cultivation of bacteria and fungi, as well as some tissue culture media. Following consultation with the co-ordinator, MPU can also make special media, trial batches of media or experimental media.

Doherty Institute Flow Cytometry Facility
ImmunoID is a purpose built facility that provides researchers from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology with a world class Flow Cytometry resource. Equipped with the latest high-end instrumentation it also forms part of the Melbourne Cytometry Platform providing a great resource for the The University of Melbourne and broader scientific community in and around Melbourne.

Microbiological Diagnostic Unit Public Health Laboratory
MDU PHL works closely with the Victorian Health Department, local government authorities, private and public diagnostic laboratories to protect public health. The MDU PHL is accredited with NATA for the Forensic Operations Module in addition to Medical, Veterinary and Biological Testing.

The Human T cell research group in the Department of Immunology at The University of Melbourne is available for research contracts.
