Rural pathway to the Doctor of Medicine

Are you from a rural background? Would you like to pursue professional health education and research training in a rural area after your undergraduate degree? Find out how

For Steven, a first year medical student from regional Victoria, the Bachelor of Biomedicine, formed the first step in his dream of becoming doctor. After graduating he applied for the Doctor of Medicine Rural Pathway Progam – and studying close to home in regional Victoria means he can get support from family when he needs it.

The University of Melbourne’s Doctor of Medicine Rural Pathway Program is a collaboration with La Trobe University providing regional students a rural medical pathway. There are two entry pathway - one includes students completing an undergraduate degree in any discipline and demonstrating their rural origins and commitment to rural practice.

MD students in the rural program have access to the new teaching and accommodation facilities in Shepparton and are part of a small, tight knit cohort of students. And as Steven says, not everyone wants to move away from home and may be looking to stay close to family.

For those considering a career as a doctor and come from a rural background – or would like to contribute to increasing the rural health force - the Doctor of Medicine Rural Pathway may be the perfect fit.
