Lymphoid progenitor cells enter the thymus and undergo selection, while progressing through the thymic cortex (dimmer region) and medulla (brighter region). In this process mature T cells (red), including innate-like T cells such as Natural Killer T cells (green), develop from these progenitor cells and are specific to foreign antigens, but tolerant to self. Imaging these cells during their development, in particular the less well studied innate-like T cells, is an important part in better understanding the developmental processes of an important group of immune cells.
