Research Themes
The Centre for Stem Cell Systems supports the University of Melbourne’s multidisciplinary stem cell research network, spanning five broad themes.
-
Stem Cells and Developmental Biology
This theme addresses fundamental biological questions regarding cell identity, cell state and cell fate. Understanding cell differentiation and regulation underpins all stem cell research and applications.
-
Stem Cells and Disease Modelling
By creating a replica of the affected tissue in the lab from stem cells, researchers in this theme are able to gain a greater understanding of how various diseases manifest and where there maybe opportunities to intervene to prevent progression of disease or instigate tissue repair.
-
Stem Cells and Engineering
This theme explores how we can engineer better biocompatible materials to support stem cell derived tissues for transplantation and repair.
-
Systems and Synthetic Biology
This theme explores how cells work as part of more complex biological systems. Combining this with our understanding of stem cell biology provides the potential to develop cell types with new or improved functions.
-
Stem Cells and Society
This theme investigates the ethical, legal and social implications of stem cell research and emerging technologies, and how we are educating professionals and the next generation of researchers about these issues.

MRFF support of Stem Cell Research @ UniMelb
The University of Melbourne administers the Medical Research Future Fund Accelerated Research stem cell projects: five national teams translating stem cell medicine. Read about the research taking stem cells from the lab into the clinic.
