MJ Gething: supporting research momentum in ECRs

Early Career Researcher, Dr Jaime Foong from the Dept of Physiology receives MJ Gething Award.

Like many working parents, Dr Jaime Foong, a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Physiology,  has found her caring responsibilities have significantly increased this year as a result of COVID-19 and home learning requirements.

But now, as the latest recipient of the MJ Gething Award, Jaime hopes to hire a part-time research assistant to help her regain the research momentum she has lost. Jaime requires key experiments to be completed to inform research publications.

“These experiments are important preliminary work for the research grants I intend to apply for next year”, she says.

Working in the Bornstein laboratory: Enteric neuroscience, Jaime’s research focuses on the functional development of the nervous system in the gastrointestinal tract (the Enteric Nervous System).

“My latest research discovered that antibiotic exposure early in life disrupts gut microbiota and the enteric nervous system, which results in impaired gastrointestinal motility in mice,” says Jaime.
