Meet Elyse
A love of psychology, a fascination with life, the conscious mind and a keen pursuit to find answers to some of life’s biggest questions have been the driving forces behind Elyse’s study pathway.
Now in her third year of the Bachelor of Biomedicine, Elyse is majoring in Neuroscience.
This major has given me an in-depth understanding of how neural circuits and pathways contribute to various mental processes - from perception and memory to emotion and decision-making.
Elyse reflects: "There are still so many unknowns - but if I am able to find partial answers to some of life’s biggest questions, then I know I am on the right track of my study journey.”
Like many, Elyse chose the University of Melbourne for its location in the heart of the biomedical precinct, surrounded by world-leading research facilities, a commitment to academic excellence and the vibrant array of social clubs.
"My transition to university was smooth...largely due to my experience of home learning during VCE amidst COVID. This period of remote learning equipped me with essential skills that eased my shift to university," she says.
In her first year of undergraduate studies, Elyse gained valuable insights into student life and where to access information through the University’s Peer Mentor Program.
"We were allocated a group led by a Peer Mentor which I found very beneficial. I was inspired by this experience and took on a role as a Peer Mentor during my second year."
While living over an hour away from campus has its challenges, Elyse still tries to participate in University's vibrant student culture. She attends social events hosted by the Biomedicine Student Society and is a member of the German Club.
As she nears the completion of her degree, Elyse plans to pursue a Masters in an allied health profession like Speech Pathology. Passionate about providing patient-centred care, she hopes to understand and assist individuals who have experienced speech injuries.
