Meet Cameron
Exploring the world through study

Studying breadth subjects during his Biomedicine degree meant Cameron could delve into Urban Planning where he discovered interesting links between the built environment, access to services, and public health outcomes.
I’ve loved meeting and connecting with people who are passionate about science...learning from world leading researchers has been incredible.
But the biggest highlight of his degree so far has been going on exchange to the University of Manchester in the UK where he spent a semester abroad and got to explore Europe. While moving to a new country came with its challenges, the experience turned into one of the most rewarding parts of Cameron's university journey so far.

“Adapting the new environment was a little overwhelming at first,” Cameron says. “But I knew a few people from UniMelb who were already in Manchester which really helped.”
I soon realised that the student experience is pretty universal – everyone’s juggling study stress and uni life.
Through the Exchange Program, Cameron didn’t just explore a new city, he also stepped outside his academic comfort zone. He completed three breadth subjects while overseas, diving into topics beyond the typical biomedicine content.
One standout was ‘International Disaster Management and Humanitarian Response' where for his final paper, Cameron explore the global narratives around COVID-19.
I wrote about the dominant discourses that shaped how we responded to the pandemic. We usually focus so much on the science behind treatment but this made me think about the bigger picture – like who gets access to care and why.

Being on exchange and away from home also taught Cameron valuable life lessons – like how to be independent and solve problems on his own.
He encourages other students to jump on the chance to go abroad.
Opportunities like Exchange don’t come around often. Yes, it can be challenging but it’s also full of wonderful memories, new friendships and the chance to see the world.
