Meet Amanda
For Amanda doing a Bachelor of Biomedicine at the University of Melbourne, situated in the heart of the Biomedical Precinct, has given her the opportunity to learn from industry professionals.
The University’s connections with institutions like the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection & Immunity, and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) have facilitated my research into potential further study, internships, and work opportunities.
Amanda’s interest in science began during high school but she was unsure of the career path she wanted to follow. The Bachelor of Biomedicine degree caught her attention due to its well-structured curriculum.
It allowed me to explore nearly every major within the field of science with the flexibility to extend my knowledge and learn from other faculties - I was able to study health law, physics, mathematics, and eco-health.
Majoring in physiology, Amanda says the major has influenced her future career aspirations.
“This major not only challenges me to think critically and creatively but also encourages me to explore clinical presentations beyond the conventional boundaries. I am genuinely fascinated by every system in the body and how they collectively contribute to our overall health and survival.”
Engaging with the University’s knowledgeable professors and being mentored by academic advisors has also been pivotal to her experience, giving Amanda insights, guidance and a source of inspiration.
Reflecting on her university journey, Amanda says it took a while to adjust to the shift in learning style from high school to a fast-paced structure and self-directed study, fewer personal connections as well as learning how to navigate life independently. It was the Peer Mentor Program at the University that Amanda is most grateful for. So much so that she later volunteered herself to be a peer mentor to help new Bachelor of Biomedicine students in their transition to University.
The weekly sessions allowed me to connect with my peers and learn from my peer mentor, who was very kind and shared invaluable advice which helped me navigate university for the first time.
Passionate about patient care, Amanda is now aspiring to a career where she can help and care for others.
"I would love to work in health care...where I can contribute to everyone’s well-being, allowing patients to live life to the fullest. While I have not made the final decision yet, I am hoping to pursue a career in cardiac perfusion," she says.
