Meet Our Talent

Meet Maciej Daniszewski

Maciej joined the School of Biomedical Sciences after completing his PhD, having previously been based at the Centre for Eye Research Australia at the Royal Eye and Ear Hospital.

Specialising in the use of human stem cells to understand the underlying mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, Maciej is working to develop personalised treatment strategies for patients.

Alongside his research, Maciej manages a stem cell facility under the umbrella of Phenomics Australia. The facility generates human stem cell lines for researchers and provides hands-on training in stem cell culture for people entering the field.

“The opportunity to make a meaningful difference to patients’ health and the ability to translate fundamental research into outcomes that may improve lives is a powerful motivator,” says Maciej.

The School and the broader Biomedical precinct are a fantastic place to work. The people here are deeply passionate about what they do and why they do it, and there is a strong culture of openness and collaboration when it comes to tackling complex health challenges.

His current research projects focus on using large numbers of stem cell lines (a “village-in-a-dish” approach) to investigate the underlying mechanisms of cardiovascular disease and bipolar disorder.

Next, Maciej would like to secure external funding to explore new and innovative approaches to brain research using patient-derived stem cell lines.
