Meet our inspiring alumni
Meet Dr WuJi Zhang
Bachelor of Biomedicine alumni and recent PhD graduate Dr WuJi Zhang, has been honoured with a prestigious award for his groundbreaking research on COVID-19 immune responses.
Now a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong, WuJi is deeply grateful for the recognition.
"I am honoured to receive this prestigious award…this recognition not only affirms the value and impact of my research but also stands as a testament to the unwavering support and mentorship I received throughout my PhD studies," he says.
Beginning his journey with a Bachelor of Biomedicine in the School of Biomedical Science, WuJi went on to join Professor Katherine Kedzierska's laboratory in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology for Honours study, a decision that shaped his future career path.

Groundbreaking COVID-19 Research
Wuji’s PhD research, undertake in the Kedzierska Lab, provided crucial insights into human immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"My PhD work investigated the immunological mechanisms underlying COVID-19, mapping immune networks in both blood and respiratory samples," Dr Zhang explained.
One of the most significant aspects of the research was its focus on underrepresented populations.
"Importantly, my work delivered the world's first comprehensive analysis of immune responses to COVID-19 vaccinations and infections in Australian First Nations peoples, highlighting vulnerabilities among individuals with chronic conditions such as renal disease and diabetes.”

Wuji says it’s the real-world impact of his studies and the collaborative spirit of the research community during the pandemic that have inspired him the most.
“The opportunity to contribute to urgent, real-world challenges that affect millions of people. I am especially motivated by the chance to advance understanding of viral immune responses in vulnerable and underrepresented populations, such as First Nations peoples.”
For those just starting their research journey, Wuji says to embrace challenges and not to be afraid of making mistakes, as they are valuable learning opportunities.
“Maintain curiosity and passion for research - these are the driving forces that have guided me throughout my PhD studies and continue to inspire me," he says.
