Metabolic diseases, such as obesity and type-2 diabetes, are amongst the world's biggest and fasting growing health concerns. Currently, metabolic disease costs more than $2 trillion of global health expenditure and causes 6.5 million deaths globally each year. With the ever-increasing metabolic disease epidemic and the insurmountable costs of treating co-morbidities (cancer, cardiovascular disease and stroke), there has never been a more desperate need to discover novel pharmacological treatments.
The brain plays a critical role in coordinating metabolism; from controlling how much fat we store to how much food we eat. Although the neuronal circuitry underlying metabolic disease is incredibly complex, recent advances in the transgenic tools by which we can manipulate the brain may now make this possible. Using cutting-edge technologies and innovative in vivo models it is our research mission to uncover the brain mechanisms underlying obesity and type 2 diabetes to define novel treatments for metabolic disease.
