Early life exercise reprograms pancreatic and heart deficits in offspring born small

Project Details

We have extended my experimental paradigm to explore the impact of lifestyle factors (diet, exercise) on the dysfunction of offspring born small. Our novel finding is that endurance exercise training in early life for males born small reprograms the pancreas restoring the β-cell mass deficit. Early life exercise caused sustained physiological cardiac hypertrophy without altering blood pressure in rats born small highlighting a cardio-protective effect. By combining lifestyle factors such as exercise in my current programming model is innovative and promotes translational research.
