ASBMB 2022 honours announced

Leann Tilley and Saw Hoon Lim from the School of Biomedical Sciences have been recognised by the Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB).

ASBMB awards recognise excellence in Australian biochemistry and molecular biology. This year,  Professor Leann Tilley (Department of Biochemistry & Pharmacology and Bio21 Institute) has received the Lemberg Medal for her contributions to the scientific community. As part of the award, Professor Tilley will present the Lemberg Lecture at the ASBMB annual conference.

Working as a Professor of Biochemistry & Pharmacology, in the Bio21 Molecular Science and Biotechnology Institute, Leann's research is focused on understanding and controlling malaria - an infectious disease which kills around 600,000 people each year.

Leann is passionate about encouraging the next generation of scientists and enhancing the roles of women in science. She received the Georgina Sweet Australian Laureate Fellowship from the Australian Research Council in 2015 and established and implemented the Georgina Sweet Awards for Women in Quantitative Biomedical Science.

Dr Saw Hoon Lim from the Department of Biochemistry & Pharmacology has also been rewarded by the ASBMB for her achievements in education, receiving the the SDR Scientific Education Award. The award recognizes outstanding achievement in education in biochemistry or molecular biology - especially innovation and creativity in education. As Dr Lim says, "Teaching brings me such joy, it simply re-energizes me."

The Award will enable Dr Lim to participate in an international conference or to spend a period of time at another institution (in Australia or overseas) for the purposes of undertaking developments in education in biochemistry and molecular biology. Dr Lim will also present a lecture within the Education Symposium at the annual ASBMB conference.
