Researchers from Dept of Microbiology & Immunology named in Highly Cited Researchers 2024 List
10 researchers from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology have been recognised as Highly Cited Researchers.
As a global leader in infection and immunity, the Department of Microbiology & Immunology (DMI) at the Doherty Institute is proud to be home to 10 of the researchers named on the list of Highly Cited Researchers 2024. This prestigious recognition underscores their outstanding contributions to science and the impact of their world-leading research.
Compiled annually by Clarivate, the list identifies researchers whose publications are among the top one per cent most cited in their fields globally.

Emeritus Prof Francis Carbone
Prof Carbone is an Honorary in DMI. His laboratory is focused on infection and immunity, specifically the function and behaviour of key cells involved in the response against infection.
Prof Thomas Gebhardt
Thomas is Head of the Gebhardt Laboratory Head in DMI working to develop future vaccines and immunomodulatory therapies that target peripheral T cells for improved clinical outcomes in infection, inflammation and cancer.
Dr Claire Gorrie
Claire is a Senior Bioinformatician, investigating antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in hospitals. She works in the Centre for Pathogen Genomics, embedded in the Microbiological Diagnostic Unit Public Health Laboratory in DMI at the Doherty Institute.
Prof Axel Kallies
Axel is a Laboratory Head in DMI, his research group is studying T cells in chronic diseases like infections and cancer.
Prof Katherine Kedzierska
Katherine is Research Group Leader of the Human T cell Laboratory, recognised for her leading research on T cell immunity to viral infections. Her team - known as the 'Corona Queens’ - won the 2023 Australian Infectious Diseases Research Centre Eureka Prize for pioneering COVID-19 immunity research. Read more
Prof Stephen Kent
As a Laboratory Head in DMI, Stephen is leading a research group studying immunity to HIV, Influenza, COVID-19 and other variable and difficult to vaccinate against viruses.
Prof Laura Mackay
Laura is an award-winning biomedical scientist, Laboratory Head and Immunology Theme Leader in DMI. She works at the forefront of research into tissue-resident memory T cells.
Prof Kanta Subbarao
Kanta Subbarao is a Honorary (Professorial Fellow) in DMI at the Doherty Institute and is an international expert on the biology, pathogenesis and vaccines for emerging viral diseases of global importance.
Dr Adam Wheatley
Adam leads a research team in DMI aiming to better understand the development and regulation of humoral immune responses to important viral diseases such as influenza and SARS-CoV-2.
Dr Ryan Wick
Ryan is a Bioinformatics Research Fellow in the Stinear Group in DMI at the Doherty Institute, developing cutting-edge computational tools for bacterial genomics.
Professor Paul Gorry, Deputy Director of the Doherty Institute, congratulated the researchers on their recognition.
This achievement highlights the high calibre of research at the Doherty Institute. It reflects not only individual dedication but also the collaborative environment that fosters impactful science.
This year’s list includes more than 6,600 individual researchers from 59 countries. Australia ranks fifth globally with 313 scientists on the list, following the United States, Mainland China, the UK and Germany.
