Stem cells therapies, biology and the gut’s second brain: Lincon Stamp features on BenchSide Story

In the latest episode of BenchSide Story, Dr Lincon Stamp (DAP) shares his research passion for stem cell biology and it’s potential as the new frontier of medicine.

From the inspiring role models Lincon met after his undergraduate degree to the present day - where he co-leads the Plasticity of the enteric nervous system laboratory in the Department of Anatomy & Physiology with Dr Marlene Hao. Together they are looking at stem cell therapies for disorders of the enteric nervous system (ENS); cancer biology and the link between the ENS and brain tumours and the impacts of microplastics and PFAS on the gut.

The enteric nervous system is the second brain of nerves that live inside the gut wall…and there’s a range of different disorders where this nervous system may be absent or lost during different disease states.

And for Lincon it’s developing new, novel stem cell therapies using human pluripotent stem cells to treat enteric neuropathies, that he is really interested in.

These stem cells generate enteric neural precursor cells that we can transplant into the gut and restore the gut’s normal function.
