"My World, My Health”

Here are the winning and shortlisted entries from our inaugural HeART of Biomedicine competition.

"Using the famous optical illusion of 'Rubin’s vase' I’m representing humans (side profile on the left) with nature or “our world” depicted with medicinal plants (side profile on the right). Tying them both to this year’s theme, biology and medicine are the common borders that humans and nature share as represented by the vase symbols. As there’s an intricate connection between our health and the world we live in, we look after our health and make medicine."

Chi Nguyen Le Thuy
(2nd Place)

"I chose to focus on the eyes and the intricate details of what they perceive. Health is one of the most vital aspects of life, yet not everyone is healthy. I illustrated a hand gently cradling a plant, symbolizing the healing process for those facing health challenges. Through this artwork, I aim to highlight how individuals perceive 'health' in their own worlds. I selected bright colours to emphasize the central ideas, particularly the colour purple, which signifies spirituality and healing."

"My artwork explores the complex relationship between health and the environment. In my everyday life, I am rapidly aware of the barriers we deal with including climate change, the decrease in natural resources, and the growing impact of pollution. My aim is to capture the vibrancy of life and the dreadful reality looming upon us. Maintaining good health may be shaped by the quality of the food we consume, the environment around us, and the decisions that we make. As today’s environment holds the key to tomorrow’s health, only by taking care of our surroundings can we ensure the future."

Thanh An Tran Ngoc
(Honourable Mention - Traditional Media)

"Our world is home to countless diseases, and every patient carries a unique story shaped by their background. Yet, despite our differences, we are all united in the fight to reclaim our health. Mother Nature stands as a brave ally in this battle. Inspired by this, I created an art piece where humans share their stories with nature, to remind us that we are not alone in our journey toward healing. In Vietnamese culture, the yellow marigold symbolizes a wish for lasting health. Through these flowers, I send my heartfelt wishes for everyone's well-being."

Trâm Võ
(Honourable Mention - Generative AI)
School: Scotch AGS

"My artwork depicts health and well-being. Nature, good health habits, and a fresh mind are the ways leading to a healthy, balanced lifestyle. The heart is a garden in the middle of the picture filled with vegetables, fruits, and plants. The cat depicts relaxation and healthy emotions; trees, flowers, and other natural components create a restful place and people who exercise are physically healthy."

"During the pandemic, my friends and I were distant, so we played games and called more often and had laugh sessions. We could do this because of the ' Vietnamese warriors' battling Covid-19. That’s why I’m saluting to them in my artwork. One of the hands reaching out holds my apartment, and I am painting an 'unfinished' self-portrait. I want to show how the pandemic shaped me, and my artwork reignites the past. Another factor that kept me 'sane' was music and my two dogs. These little things made me cherish 'my world' and 'my health' more."

"Mental illness is a struggle many face today. The girl in the picture represents someone trapped in negativity, burdened by pressures from family, friends, and society. Her tears and cold, indifferent expression reveal the emotional toll of her daily life, where she no longer feels love or connection. Her heart, once alive, has hardened, breaking apart over time. My artwork aims to emphasize the importance of caring for mental health. An individual's perspective in life could influence both their physical and mental health."

"The artwork (created by AI), shows my dream world, where every animal is protected and deserving of better treatment. In today's world, many scientists have proven the significant role of animals in improving human mental and physical health - they are willing to help people without purpose. This art conveys a better life for animals, the more animals are saved, the fewer health issues in human life."

"Turmeric has been the most powerful medicine for me as it has several medical uses like anti-inflammatory in healing scars, antioxidants for skincare products, immune support, and weight management. Since I was a kid, I have always treated my acne with turmeric ingredients, had a cup of fresh turmeric drinks in the mornings to treat stomach aches, watched my brother putting turmeric gel on his scars, and ate delicious turmeric food made by my mum."

"’Grateful’ is the name of my artwork. Now we have a healthy life and prevent disease, and pharmaceutical scientists give us this. They have played an important role in formulating and researching new medicines to save many lives. My artwork depicts a pharmaceutical scientist who is passionate about her job - though not directly treating patients they are often forgotten and always work towards a better world, where people are healthier. I painted the scientist using strong brush strokes, this embodies resilience, depth, and the effort to rise above challenges. The background shows a human head surrounded by DNA, cells, chromosomes that represents humans and every organism on this planet having a close connection.”

"This artwork took inspiration from my childhood in Australia. As an immigrant, it was difficult for me to fit in without knowing English and I spent many lonely hours at school, watching others play basketball from afar, wishing I could join. One day, I gained the courage to try and though I didn't understand everything, the sport itself was a universal language. Through basketball, I made friends who accepted me for who I was. It lifted me from isolation and gave me confidence when I felt most alone. This improved my well-being during challenging times in a new country. To this day, I still cherish those beautiful memories."

"My drawing consists of elements representing today’s generation being aware of environmental issues but being ignorant of the troubles our Mother Earth is facing. It depicts our future going to darkness, unless certain major steps are not taken urgently. How, we affect earth with trash, pollution, extinction of resources, population and biodiversity."

"My artwork, 'The Pulse of Life' depicts hands gently holding a heart, symbolizing life and the connection between humans and the world. The flowing streams from the heart, representing emotions and love, spread across the painting like an endless source of life. It conveys a message of deep attachment between the soul and the surrounding world, where every heartbeat becomes the source of life and emotion."

"My artwork represents two sides of the current world situation. On the left side, there are human-caused issues, such as smoke, dust from factories, vehicles, human waste negatively affecting the earth. On the right side, we as a community join hands to protect the earth, sweeping up trash, reusing bottles, and using paper bags instead of plastic bags to help the earth. In the middle is our earth, still green and clean, but if humans continue to destroy it, one day it become ugly and angry. Everyone should protect the environment, protect the earth and ourselves."

"In Vietnam, we hold in high regard a proverb 'Cái tóc là góc con người' emphasizing the importance of hair in our culture as a significant part of one's appearance and self-expression. My artwork highlights the connection between behaviour and creatures, combining hair with spirals representing the motion of a human being and the lotus - a famous flower in Vietnam. Every thought that is yet to become action can affect one's mind. It is necessary to think before acting."

"A girl, appears fragile and wounded reflecting illness/emotional scars. These symbolise her personal struggle with health, both physically and emotionally. The heart represent her core emotions and vitality. The earth, fractured and broken, symbolises the planet's own stage mirroring the girl's wounds. She is using her own bleeding heart to heal the Earth. This speaks to her deep connection with the world around her - the weight of both her health and the Earth's are interconnected."
