Happy Mother’s Day to all our School of Biomedical Sciences' mums

Mother’s Day is a wonderful time to celebrate all the mothers, grandmothers, maternal bonds and special caregiving people we have in our lives - embracing the multifaceted nature of motherhood. Ahead of Mother’s Day this Sunday we checked in with a couple of our School of Biomedical Sciences mums to see what they love about being a mum.


Maria di Biase

I get to spend my day exploring what I’m curious about, and then come home to the joy of my little one. I feel incredibly lucky.

Dr Maria Di Biase, Senior Research Fellow | Dept of Anatomy & Physiology

Maria’s research aims to uncover the neurobiological mechanisms driving severe mental illness, with a particular focus on addressing biological heterogeneity and advancing the search for clinically meaningful biomarkers.


Stephanie Neville

This is my first Mother’s Day. As much as I miss my research, spending time with my tiny human is definitely worth it!

Dr Stephanie Neville, Research Fellow | Dept of Microbiology & Immunology

Stephanie is a bacteriologist in DMI investigating the human pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae. Her research explores how metal ions are used by both the bacterium and the host immune system to control infection.


Diana Stojanovski

There are many things I enjoy about being a mum, but the most rewarding has been watching my children transition through their stages, from baby to toddler, to school age and pre-teen.

Each phase brings its own magic, from their first words and steps to watching them tackle a main meal at a restaurant (no more kids meals), or even learning to embrace my son’s decision to grow a mullet (this took a lot of adapting on my part).

It’s a real privilege to walk alongside them as they discover who they are and what makes them light up.

Diana’s research investigates the energy plants of our cells, the mitochondrion. The Stojanovski Lab is a leader in understanding fundamental mitochondrial biology and what goes wrong in mitochondrial disease.


Mother's day is such a special opportunity to thank all the strong women that have been role models in our lives. It's even more special as I watch my mother and mother-in-law become grandmothers, seeing first-hand the love and care they showed us as babies, but now to my cheeky daughter.

Dr Susan Christo | Research Officer | Dept Microbiology & Immunology

Susan has an interest in T cell biology and is currently working on identifying key factors that regulate the phenotype, differentiation and survival of tissue-resident memory T cell in a range of settings such as cancer.


One of the things I love best about being a mum is the spontaneity of each day and the fun activities on the weekends. Whether it’s ice skating, playing basketball or riding water slides at the pool, kids are always up for doing something new and having fun.
