Join our Career Exploration Series of events tailored specifically for the BBioMed cohort to kick-start an exciting journey of career exploration.
What do an architect, an optometrist, an orthopaedic surgery registrar, a dentist, a patent attorney, a physiotherapist, a critical care resident, a lab manager and a continuous improvement manager all have in common?

There are many paths you can take and career exploration is just the beginning!

The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences and School of Biomedical Sciences together with the Biomed Student Society (BSS) are hosting a 'Careers Exploration Series' on subjects and topics relevant to 1st year biomed students. Held across three sessions, these panel conversations will feature experts across various areas.

Its never too early to start career planning whilst you study. Be open to opportunities and ready for your next move... These events will explore and highlight just some of the diverse career opportunities available with a Bachelor of Biomedicine. They offer an opportunity to connect with your peers IRL, and inspiration for what might be possible when you finish study.Studies show the earlier career thinking occurs the higher likelihood of success and satisfaction in the long term!

![]() | Dr Marthe D’Ombrain PhD GCALL GAICD, Executive Director & Head, Global Research Innovation Research, CSL Marthe has over 20 years experience in the life sciences sector, her skills and experience encompass research and development, drug discovery and development, commercialisation, licensing, strategy, business development, project management, partnerships, and fundraising. Marthe championed the CSL Research Acceleration Initiative (early stage fund), and the Jamar BioIncubator that supports Australian and international start-up companies to translate promising medical research into commercial outcomes. |
| Dr Michael Baker, CEO Arovella Therapeutics Dr Michael Baker is passionate about creating life changing medications for the betterment of humankind, Dr Baker’s careers spans academic research, drug development and venture investing. His primary focus is to get medications into the hands of patients that need them. |
| Dr Mara Macdonald, Investment Manager Brandon Capital Dr Mara Macdonald is an experienced entrepreneur and investor in the life sciences industry. She co-founded CytoVale Inc, a diagnostic company focused on early detection of infections. Previously, at Third Rock Ventures, Mara was part of the investment team for Nurix and Decibel, and led internal portfolio efforts related to drug discovery and target validation. She has also worked as a consultant at ClearView Healthcare Partners, advising pharmaceutical and biotech clients on therapeutic assessments and commercial due diligence |
| Dr Hamish McWilliam, Principle Investigator Proxima Bio Dr Hamish McWilliam is the Principal Scientist at Proxima Bio, leading the cell biology and immunology program to develop new therapeutics. Previously, he worked as a postdoc and group leader at the Doherty Institute (University of Melbourne), where he studied the molecular mechanisms of the immune system. Hamish started his scientific career in Edinburgh and completed his PhD in veterinary parasitology at Monash University. |
| Dr Kai Qi Yek, BBiomed/ Honours/PhD graduate @UniMelb Dr Kai Qi Yek started her journey at UniMelb studying a Bachelor of Biomedicine (Honors) followed by PhD studies in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the Stojanovski Lab. Kai now works in the same research group where the team is focused on understanding the fundamental processes governing mitochondrial function and their implications for human health and disease. |
| A/Prof Diana Stojanovski, Associate Professor & Head of Laboratory, Department of Biochemistry and Pharmacology @UniMelb A/Prof Diana Stojanovski and her research team are on a mission is to create new knowledge in mitochondrial biology to improve understanding of the inner workings of the most fundamental unit in life, the cell. Her research aims to understand how mitochondrial proteins are trafficked within cells, and how failure in protein trafficking leads to disease. Diana's study journey began with a degree in Cell Biology which led her on PhD studies in Biochemistry. |
