Art of Biomedicine
The art competition: Art of Biomedicine, sponsored by the School of Biomedical Sciences, and now in its second year received 17 submissions from Vietnamese high school students currently living and studying in Vietnam.
This year's theme "The Inner Universe: The Hidden World of Biomedicine" invited participants to use art to explore and express the hidden wonders of the human body and through drawing, painting, digital design, or any creative medium, show how science and imagination can come together.
The realm of biomedicine is filled with wonders invisible to the naked eye. From the intricate dance between cells to the complex structures of proteins, the microscopic world holds the key to understanding health and disease.
Art and Biomedicine have always been allies, with their ability to evoke emotion and provoke thought. Art can also serve as a powerful catalyst in biomedicine, fostering new perspectives and solutions. This year, we challenge you to explore and visualise the unseen aspects of biomedicine that fascinate you.
Whether it's the elegant twist of DNA, the busy world inside a single cell, the chemistry of biological systems or complex networks of the nervous system, so much of what keeps us alive happens out of sight.
Professor Gary Anderson (DBP), member of the judging panel, said they were delighted again by the response to the competition.
The artworks were of a very high standard and reflect a deep interest in the relationship between personal and global concerns - from mental health, the pandemic to the importance of the environment in our health and wellbeing.
Overall three winners were selected along with two honourable mentions. Please join us in congratulating the winning entries - and take a moment to view the top artworks in our online gallery.

"The explanation of the painting is as beautiful as the artwork. My eye was drawn into the shimmering complexity found in this single droplet, and my interest was deepened by the description that highlights the parallel intricacies of the human body. This painting inspired in me a deep sense of wonder."

SECOND: Bao Anh Vu
School: Delta Global School
"Congratulations on earning second place in the Art of Biomedicine competition! We were captivated by the powerful duality presented in your artwork, captured your personal experiences bringing in history and culture. Your interpretation of the theme "The Inner Universe: The Hidden World of Biomedicine" was both meaningful and thought-provoking, reminding us that health knowledge is generational. Your work communicates a strong message about personal responsibility, encouraging viewers to care for both their internal and external environments."

THIRD: Quan Bui
School: Lawrence S Ting School
"A beautiful and intriguing piece. The artwork captures the elegance and complexity of biology in a way that feels both poetic and precise, while the description adds a very thoughtful narrative. This picture really inspired me to reflect and appreciate the hidden beauty of living systems."
(Prof Debnath Ghosal, judging panel)
HONOURABLE MENTION: Đan Nguyễn Linh
School: Delta Global School
"This work elegantly reveals the hidden biomedical power within sharks, transforming VNAR science into a poetic visual metaphor that celebrates unseen contributors to life-saving medical discovery and human health innovation."
(Dr Louise Rowntree, judging panel)
HONOURABLE MENTION: Pheonix Nguyen-Vo
School: European International School
"The visual contrast of the bright colours against a dark background immediately grabbed my attention. I found myself examining with interest the separate neurons and petri dishes along the right side of the painting; each of them a new artwork in their own right."
