‘a velvet ant, a flower and a bird'

First-year Biomedicine students sharpen observation and communication skills through art at the Potter Museum of Art.

To celebrate the submission of a major assessment in BIOM10001: Discovering Biomedicine, our first-year Bachelor of Biomedicine students recently visited the Potter Museum of Art.

The multi-session visits were coordinated by Kyla McFarlane and Shirley Liu, Academic Engagement Coordinators from University Collections, and supported by a team of dedicated teaching associates.

During the visit, students engaged with the current exhibition, "a velvet ant, a flower and a bird" using it as a platform to develop their 'deep looking' and descriptive writing skill: essential capabilities for future biomedical scientists and healthcare professionals. The experience also highlighted the important role that engaging with the arts can play in supporting health and wellbeing, aligning with our Advancing Students in Education (ASE) strategy.

Feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive, with a collaborative drawing activity providing both creativity and camaraderie. We extend our sincere thanks to the team at the Potter Museum of Art for accommodating our large biomedicine cohort, at times outside standard opening hours.

The exhibition ‘a velvet ant, a flower and a bird’ runs until 6 June 2026.
