Meet Our Talent
Meet Nikeisha Caruana
Now a Research Fellow at the Bio21 Institute, Nikeisha focuses on computational proteomics and bioinformatics to improve diagnosis rates for people living with rare diseases.
Being able to work in a field like rare disease where my research has an immediate impact on people’s lives is the best part about my work
Direct contact with clinicians, patients and their families inspires Nikeisha to deliver research with real-world impact.
Working within the Biomedical Precinct has played a key role in her development as an early career researcher. Surrounded by world leading researchers, Nikeisha values the advice, support and collaboration opportunities available to her as she continues to build her career. Having access to the specialised mass spectrometry facilities and expertise at Bio21 has been crucial to her research.
Nikeisha’s current projects centre on developing user-friendly tools and software to help clinicians and scientists analyse complex data and diagnose rare diseases. Looking ahead, Nikeisha aims to implement these tools nationally, enabling standardised practices across Australian laboratories to improve diagnostic outcomes.
She sees artificial intelligence as a significant force shaping the future of bioinformatics, with the potential to deliver meaningful benefits for patients and their families if applied thoughtfully.
Reflecting on her own journey, Nikeisha offers this advice: “Keep your hobbies going, they sustain you in the trying times of research.”
Beyond her research, Nikeisha runs a monthly bioinformatics coffee catch-up on campus, welcoming participants at any stage of their studies or careers.
