Discovering Biomedicine: outcomes shared at ISSOTL conference

Teaching and learning expert Prof Karena Waller presents to international audience on the transition of biomedicine students to University.

The approach to Discovering Biomedicine, a core first subject in the Bachelor of Biomedicine, is designed to help support the transition of commencing of students to university study.

Prof Karena Waller (Dept of Microbiology and Immunology; Deputy Program Director of the Bachelor of Biomedicine) recently attended the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL) Annual Conference in the USA and presented to attendees from around the world, sharing the School’s approach to curriculum design for the subject.

“We also shared the outcomes of our scholarly evaluations of student feedback and their experience, as well as our reflections, derived across seven consecutive semesters of delivery,” Prof Karena Waller said.

The ISSOTL Annual Conference provides a forum for the communication and dissemination of scholarly outputs and for networking and collaborating with international colleagues.

“Supporting the transition of commencing students was a key theme at the conference this year and there were several other presentations institutions around the globe, including one from our Faculty of Arts colleagues."

Prof Waller's presentation and associated work was co-authored by colleagues in the School of Biomedical Sciences, Dr Daniel Clarke (DMI), Dr Amber Willems-Jones (DBP), Dr Yu May Soh (DMI) and A/Prof Graham Mackay (DBP) with collaborators in the Faculty of Science.
