Careers Exploration Series – where will your degree take you?
These events have been tailored specifically for the BBioMed cohort to kick-start an exciting journey of career exploration.
What do an architect, an optometrist, an orthopaedic surgery registrar, a dentist, a patent attorney, a physiotherapist, a critical care resident, a lab manager and a continuous improvement manager all have in common?
A Bachelor of Biomedicine... just like you...there are many paths and career exploration is just the beginning!
Session 1 - From Lab to Leadership: Research Career Paths
The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences and School of Biomedical Sciences together with the Biomed Student Society (BSS) are hosting a 'Careers Exploration Series' on subjects and topics relevant to 1st year biomed students. Held across three sessions, these panel conversations will feature experts across various areas:

* Session 3 - My Journey to Dentistry / Medicine

| Prof Justine MinternAssociate Dean for Graduate Research, Faculty of Medicine Dentistry & Health Sciences Prof Justine Mintern is the Head of the Vaccine Biology Laborator at the Bio21 Molecular Science and Biotechnology Institute. Her research team investigates the fundamental biology of dendritic cells. She has served as the Editor in Chief for Molecular Immunology and is the current Associate Dean for Graduate Research for Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at University of Melbourne. |
| Dr Fern KoayBachelor of Biomedicine → PhD (Immunology) → Postdoctoral Research Fellow Dr Hui-Fern Koay, 2022 Fellow of L'Oreal-UNESCO Women in Science, is an ARC DECRA fellow at the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity. Her research investigates T cell development, homeostasis, subsets and their functional diversity, with a view to harness these unconventional immune cells in a variety of disease settings and immunotherapies. |
| Dr Michael BakerCEO & Managing Director, Arovella Therapeutics Dr Michael Baker is passionate about creating life changing medications for the betterment of humankind, Dr Baker’s careers spans academic research, drug development and venture investing. His primary focus is to get medications into the hands of patients that need them.Dr Fern Koay |
| Dr Mara MacdonaldInvestment Manager - Melbourne, Brandon Capital Mara is an experienced entrepreneur and investor in the life sciences industry. She is part of the investment team at Brandon Capital, this role included taking a CEO position with a stealth portfolio company. Mara co-founded CytoVale Inc, a diagnostic company focused on early and rapid detection of infection. |
| Celine DuboisStudent Support & Development Liaison Coordinator, The Florey Celine graduated from the Bachelor of Biomedicine, majoring in Pathology, in 2017. She then completed the Master of Biomedical Science in 2019 at the University of Melbourne. Celine began her journey at The Florey in 2018 as a Master student. Before transitioning to her current position in July 2023, Celine was the Laboratory Manager within the Neurodegeneration and Neuropathology Group. |
 | Julia Mercuri-SvikHonours Student, Stojanovski Group, Dept Biochemistry & Pharmacology Julia completed a Bachelor of Science in 2023 with a major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. In third year, Julia undertook a research-based internship in biotechnology through the CSIRO Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). Hooked by an undergraduate research project in mitochondrial biology, she is currently continuing this project in an Honours degree. |
