Innovation in Surgical Anatomy Competition
The Innovation in Surgical Anatomy Competition was held on Wednesday evening 7 September in the Wright Theatre at Parkville.
The competition is sponsored by the Department of Anatomy and Physiology and the Department of Surgery, Melbourne Medical School in conjunction with the Surgical Students’ Society of Melbourne. The competition was inaugurated in 2020 and is held annually; however due to COVID constraints, the annual prize presentations and awards have been held virtually to date and this was the first year that were able to hold an in-person event.
More than 50 guests attended the event which is open to years one to four medical students in the Melbourne Medical School and can be entered by individuals or small teams according to year level. Competitors are asked to research a surgical field or procedure which has been revolutionised by technological advancements.
They then apply this knowledge to formulate a research question and present the evidence to answer the question either as a short video or as a scientific poster. The judges for the event were selected from both the Department of Anatomy and Physiology and clinicians from the Department of Surgery.
