Welcome from Head of Department

From Professor Lizzie Coulson

Head of Department

Established in 1862 and with a strong record of excellence, our Department's goal is to remain at the forefront of scientific research using novel and imaginative research methods to study developmental, degenerative and chronic disease.

Welcome to the Department of Anatomy and Physiology, one of three Departments that form the School of Biomedical Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences (MDHS) at the University of Melbourne.

The Department of Anatomy and Physiology is one of Australia’s premier biomedical research and education institutions. We are a vibrant Department, consisting of 35 internationally-recognised research groups with ~120 academic staff supported by ~40 professional staff.  Our teams are conducting world-class research to better understand how the human body works, the causes of chronic illnesses and to identify new treatments for some of the most challenging diseases impacting our society.

Our academic staff have expertise that spans the disciplines of neuroscience, metabolism, cell biology, muscle biology and biomedical education research. We are responsible for co-ordinating undergraduate Majors in Cell and Developmental Biology, Human Structure and Function, and Neuroscience. Additionally, we teach into diverse professional programs, including the Bachelor of Biomedicine, Medicine, Physiotherapy and other allied health.  With graduate training programs also in these disciplines, the Department of Anatomy and Physiology at the University of Melbourne offers many exciting opportunities to learn, train and conduct research in the Biomedical Sciences.

The Department of Anatomy and Physiology is privileged to be responsible for the University of Melbourne’s Body Donor Program for human cadaveric anatomy education, one of the longest running and largest of its kind in Australia. We are also home for the Centre for Muscle Research, a hub for research and engagement in the field of Muscle Biology. More recently we launched the ADAPT lab, our cutting-edge facility for bringing AI and advanced digital solutions to drive innovation in our education and training programs.
