Biomedicine Research Immersion Program

Discover what it’s like to be a researcher!

The Research Immersion Program provides second-year Bachelor of Biomedicine students with the opportunity to experience research from the inside. Spend 4-weeks embedded in an active laboratory within the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS), working alongside world-class researchers.

Nine students will be selected for this unique opportunity to discover whether research could be part of their future.

This is more than a placement. It is an opportunity to explore your potential as a researcher; build research skills; connect with leading research teams in Parkville; and contribute to real research projects in a supportive environment.

This program is designed for students who are passionate about discovery, eager to explore research pathways, and are interested in making a future impact on human health.

Program Overview

Who can apply?

Selected second-year Bachelor of Biomedicine students who demonstrate strong academic achievement and a genuine interest in research.

When does the program run?

The 2027 program will run from Monday 1 February to Friday 26 February.

What will I do?

You will be placed within an research laboratory and work alongside experienced researchers on an active research project.

Research hosts:

Once selected into the program, students will be presented with a selection of research projects across the three SBS Departments:

  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Biochemistry and Pharmacology
  • Microbiology and Immunology

Once selected into the program, the nine students will have the opportunity to learn more about projects on offer and rank their top three preferences. Students will then be matched to a research laboratory based on their interests and preferences.

How will I be supported?

Students receive mentoring and supervision from academic staff and senior researchers, with a strong focus on developing research skills and professional confidence.

Program outcome

At the conclusion of the placement, students will present their experience and learning outcomes at a laboratory meeting.

Application Process

Eligibility

To be considered, students must:

  • be a current Bachelor of Biomedicine student at the University of Melbourne
  • Have completed between 150-250 credit points at the time of the placement.

As part of this application you will be asked to complete a personal statement (maximum of 300 words) outlining your motivation to complete this laboratory placement program, your research interests and your career goals.

Shortlisted applicants may be invited to participate in a brief interview to discuss their motivation for participating in the program.

Biomedicine Research Immersion Award

All successful applicants will be automatically considered for the Biomedicine Research Immersion Award, worth $1600 each.
