Using chemotherapy to fight malaria
Leading malaria researcher Professor Leann Tilley (Dept. of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) and her team have discovered that cancer treatments can help overcome growing resistance to a frontline antimalarial drug, artemisinin.Our congratulations to Professor Tilley and her team for the publication of their research paper 'Artemisinin kills malaria parasites by damaging proteins and inhibiting the proteasome' in Nature Communications on Tuesday 18 September.

Professor Leann Tilley awarded presitgious fellowship
Leann Tilley was among the 15 ARC Australian Laureate Fellowship award winners announced on 23 June by the Federal Government.Leann was awarded one of two special fellowships for females, the Georgina Sweet Australian Laureate Fellowship, for her world-leading research on malaria pathogenesis and drug resistance and also to undertake an ambassadorial role to promote women in research.Collectively the fellows will receive $42 million over five years.

Research in the Faculty
The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences is Australia's largest biomedical research faculty. We employ more than 1500 academic staff, 4000 honorary staff and 1500 graduate researchers undertaking world class research across a wide range of health and social issues in a diverse range of research settings. Researchers are located at key sites across Victoria, with more conducting research around the world. These renowned experts from every field can be found in labs, hospitals, affiliated research institutes and all across the wider community.

Welcome to the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Professor Ian van Driel
The Department offers an exciting environment for the study of molecular life sciences. We use our strengths in research as a foundation for the delivery of high quality courses to our undergraduate and graduate students in biomedicine, science and medicine.
Our Affiliation with Bio21 Institute
The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. The Department administration, teaching staff, and student laboratories are located in the Medical Building on the main Parkville campus of the University. Since the opening of the Bio21 Institute in 2005, researchers within our Department have been located in the new facility on Flemington Road. Researchers at Bio21 are from a number of different Departments and Schools at the University of Melbourne and include biochemists, chemists, geneticists, zoologists, computational biologists, pharmacologists, engineers and dental scientists.
