I am pleased to welcome you into the Master of Biomedical Science. This course has been created to offer graduates an alternative to the Honours undergraduate year in providing a pathway to the PhD or into a research or science-based career. The course will give you an understanding of the research process, as well as the opportunity to develop specialist knowledge and professional skills that are attractive to employers.
The course includes specialisations that are underpinned by the supervised research project, undertaken in participating Departments of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, and distinguished by coursework choices. The Discovery specialisation provides a range of coursework choices and emphasises Department/Theme-based fundamental and translational research for those aspiring to a research career. The Enterprise specialisation coursework will introduce students to entrepreneurship and prepare students to drive innovation in the biomedical sciences and develop careers in either academia or a growing local biomedical research industry. The Vision Science specialisation will provide a research pathway for students interested in optometry and vision sciences.
You will complete your research project under the supervision of a staff member located in one of the Schools of Biomedical Sciences, Medicine, Vision Science, or affiliated institutes, in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. Your supervisor and host Department/academic unit will be responsible for assessment relating to your research project, with academic and administrative oversight provided by the School of Biomedical Sciences. Your coursework subjects will be administered by the nominated subject coordinator. The Master's course structure will enable you to interact extensively with other research student groups in your host Department/academic unit and to participate in coursework activities with Honours and other Masters students at the University. The opportunity to interact with a range of students and academics in a variety of settings will offer you a rich cohort and mentoring experience.
I hope you enjoy your experience of studying the Master of Biomedical Science and that success in the course will lead to a fulfilling career of your choice.
