Exchanging experiences on T&L in medical microbiology with Fudan University
Development and delivery of a novel, innovative curriculum in medical microbiology for students studying Medicine comes with many challenges, including the inclusion of cross-discipline integration. In July, a team of dedicated teachers from Department of Microbiology and Immunology (Roy Robins-Browne, Helen Cain, Karena Waller, Hayley Newton and Odilia Wijburg) travelled to Shanghai (China), on invitation to attend a one-week forum organised with our colleagues at Fudan University Shanghai Medical College to discuss our experiences and expertise in curriculum integration in medical microbiology and immunology. The week focused on discussions of models of curriculum integration, approaches and difficulties of introduction of a new curriculum and the role of staff members and teacher training programs to deliver practical classes. A highlight of the week was the opportunity to demonstrate some of our workshop sessions and practical classes to undergraduate students and staff at Fudan University Medical College. Preparation of the program and presentations for the forum provided a useful opportunity for peer-review and reflection on the design and delivery of our curriculum, as well as an excellent opportunity to foster global connections in scholarship of teaching and learning.
