My field of research is how organs develop and regenerate from stem cells. This also relates to how this process goes awry in cancer development. This area of science has never been so exciting. We can look at a gene sequence in humans and then rapidly use modern genomic technology to generate a similar mutation in a fruit fly to determine how that mutation affects gene function. In biomedicine, there is not only a single path to follow in a career, but many ways of getting to the same place.

If I could have dinner with anyone, it would be Nelson Mandela because I would like to know how he came to forgive his captors and what it takes to bring diverse people together with a common goal!
