As a postdoctoral scientist, my primary role is laboratory-based research. The most inspiring aspect of this job is the thrill of discovery – getting an unexpected result, or having of those rare moments when you discover something completely new.

We now have more capability than ever before to start tackling some of the big questions related to human health, medicine and disease. However, our continued efforts to improve quality of life is not without a cost. We only need to look at the alarming rates of antibiotic resistance in our hospitals and communities to see that we have taken our current microbial drugs for granted.

I believe we have reached a crucial tipping point and we need to invest our time, effort and resources into finding new solutions to combat the possibility of entering a ‘post-antibiotic’ era.
