These events have been tailored specifically for the BBioMed cohort to kick-start an exciting journey of career exploration.

What do an architect, an optometrist, an orthopaedic surgery registrar, a dentist, a patent attorney, a physiotherapist, a critical care resident, a lab manager and a continuous improvement manager all have in common?

A Bachelor of Biomedicine... just like you...there are many paths and career exploration is just the beginning!

The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences and School of Biomedical Sciences together with the Biomed Student Society (BSS) are hosting a 'Careers Exploration Series' on subjects and topics relevant to 1st year biomed students. Held across three sessions, these panel conversations will feature experts across various areas:

Prof Liz Molloy

Deputy Dean, Education, MDHS

Liz is the Deputy Dean Education, Faculty Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. She is also Professor of Work Integrated Learning, in the Department of Medical Education, Melbourne Medical School.

Liz is responsible for learning and teaching strategy and implementation in the Faculty. Her research focuses on workplace learning, feedback and assessment, interprofessional education, and teacher professional development.

A/Prof Samantha Byrne

BDSc, PhD, GCUT, Senior Lecturer and Researcher

Samantha completed a Bachelor of Dental Science (BDSc) and a PhD exploring the microbial composition of dental plaque associated with periodontal disease progression. She maintains a research interest in the microbial aetiology of chronic periodontitis and dental caries and supervises Doctor of Clinical Dentistry and Bachelor of Science Honours students.

Samantha Byrne is a senior lecturer in Oral Biology, and Divisional Lead Oral Education and Innovation at the Melbourne Dental School.

 
Dr Morgan Rayner

MD, FRACGP, General Practitioner, Lecturer in Medical Education

Dr Morgan Rayner completed his Bachelor of Biomedicine and Doctor of Medicine at Melbourne University and has subsequently become a General Practitioner working in Victoria. He has trained at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Northern Hospital and completed further training with Harvard Medical School and the University of Glasgow. His work currently focuses on digital health and primary care integration.

Morgan is the coordinator of the second and third years of the Doctor of Medicine and has research interests in interprofessional education, digital healthcare and internationalising curriculums.

 
A/Prof Lisa Cheshire

General Practitioner and Associate Professor in Medical Education

Lisa is the Director of Teaching and Learning (MD) in the Department of Medical Education, and the Doctor of Medicine (MD) Course Director, responsible for the coordination and delivery of the University of Melbourne MD. Lisa is passionate about all aspects of medical education with a primary interest in innovative curriculum design promoting flexibility, diversity and inclusion. Lisa is a regional general practitioner by training, having worked in regional Victoria for over 20 years.

 
Timothy Oe

4th year Doctor of Medicine Student

Originally from Western Australia, Timothy completed a Bachelor of Biomedicine (BBmed) in 2020 and will be completing his Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 2024. Throughout his medical school journey, he has gained valuable clinical experience undertaking placement at the Austin Hospital.

 
Ashleigh Maya

1st year Doctor of Medicine Student

Ashleigh completed a Bachelor of Biomedicine (BBmed) in 2023 with a neuroscience major, and was in the Dean's list in all 3 year levels. She was accepted into the Unimelb MD program for the 2024 intake and is now just finishing MD1, and was placed at the Royal Melbourne Hospital clinical school.
