Miegunyah Distinguished Fellowship public lecture

Hear from esteemed research biologist and Minta Martin Professor of Engineering Christopher Jewell, on 9 June.

Professor Christopher Jewell, the MPower Professor and Minta Martin Professor at the University of Maryland, and a Research Biologist with the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, will present a free public lectured titled: Harnessing nanotechnology to study and control the immune system.

The interactive lecture will explore his exciting bioengineering research at the interface of nanotechology and immunology. Through case studies, audience polls and humour, attendees will learn how unique properties of polymers and other biomaterials can be used to study and control immunity.

Professor Jewell was appointed the 2021 Miegunyah Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the University of Melbourne and is working on new vaccine technologies in the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity .

Also a faculty member with the Robert E. Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices, his  long-term goal is to integrate cutting edge bioengineering and sophisticated immunology to decode immune function and deliver new immunotherapies to the hands of patients. Achieving this could signifcantly improve human health, as well as create interdiscriplinary opportunities for a diverse group of trainees throughout his career.

Some of Professor Jewell’s other honours include selection as a Damon Runyon-Rachleff Innovator, being honoured with the White House Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), receipt of the University of Maryland Graduate Faculty Mentor of the Year and Research Communicator Impact Awards, and appointment as a scientific advisor for Science Translational Medicine. Jewell is also a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).

About the Miegunyah Distinguished Fellowship Program

In 1993 on the recommendation of the Russell and Mab Grimwade Miegunyah Fund Committee, the University Council established the Miegunyah Distinguished Visiting Fellowship Program. Since the start of the program, 93 fellowships have been awarded. Awards are open to academics residing outside of Australia, of international distinction in a field of interest to the University of Melbourne. Find out more.
