HeART of Biomedicine: Winners Announced
Join us in congratulating the talented winning entries - and view the Top 16 shortlisted artworks in our online gallery.
The inaugural art competition sponsored by the School of Biomedical Sciences received an incredible 37 submissions from Vietnamese high school students currently living and studying in Vietnam. The theme was “My World, My Health” and through the lens of creativity, the competition aimed to highlight the connections between human health, disease and the world in which we live.
Professor Gary Anderson and Associate Professor David Sequeira, members of the judging panel, said they were delighted by the response to the competition.
"It was wonderful to see the ways in which students made connections between the theme of the competition and their own experience," said Professor Gary Anderson, from the Department of Biochemistry & Pharmacology at School of Biomedical Sciences.
The artworks were of a very high standard and reflect a deep interest in the relationship between personal and global concerns - from mental health, the pandemic to the importance of the environment in our health and wellbeing.
"The care and thoughtfulness expressed in so many of the submissions made the judging process extremely difficult," said A/Prof David Sequeira.
Overall three winners were selected along with two honourable mentions. Please join us in congratulating the winning entries - and take a moment to view the Top 16 artworks in our online gallery.
FIRST: Nguyen Tran
School: Vinschool Central Park
"This work of art reflected the complexities of the theme beautifully. The two faces, one with eyes open, the other with eyes closed highlight the blurry zone between the conscious and the subconscious. The significance of nature in the process of healing seems an important aspect of this image. As does the relationship between the negative space (between the two faces)...this ‘space’ points towards the relationship between the internal world and the external world."
[Professor Gary Anderson and Associate Professor David Sequeira]
SECOND: Chi Nguyen Le Thuy
School: Vinschool Central Park
"There is a dream like anime quality to this brightly coloured image. The eye is the most striking aspect of this work. Occupying almost a third of the whole image, it dramatically highlights the relationship between seeing and perceiving. The unsettling scale of the eye is counter balanced by the calming hands which hold a plant."
[Professor Gary Anderson and Associate Professor David Sequeira]
THIRD: Tri Doan
School: Scotch AGS
"This work highlights the artist’s imaginative use of perspective and the gestural nature of their painting and digital rendering. Whilst charged with a kind of energy, the work also has a dark quality."
[Professor Gary Anderson and Associate Professor David Sequeira]
HONOURABLE MENTION:
