Dr Julie McAuley

Senior Research Officer, Department of Microbiology & Immunology

What does your research focus on and why is it important?

I am trying to understand why SARS-CoV-2 makes us so sick and gives many people long COVID. I am also trying to find ways to better protect us from infection, which includes antiseptic, antiviral, vaccine, and therapeutic research.

What was your first job in Biomedical Sciences?

While I was doing my PhD I demonstrated practical classes to undergraduate medical degree students.

How do you see your area of research evolving in the next five years?

The past couple of years have been crazy. I have felt like one of those Disney scientists, with tubes and buffers everywhere. In the next five years, I think that we’ll be taking on even more projects that involve lots of new technology and methods to try and stop this pandemic.
