Could you share your research in just three minutes? … These SBS students can!

Congratulations to all those who participated in the 3MT competition, including our three School of Biomedical Sciences finalists!

Having accepted the challenge of presenting their research in just 3 minutes, 10 PhD candidates from the University of Melbourne participated in the 2022 Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) grand final last Thursday.

Among the finalists were three School of Biomedical Sciences researchers; Charlie Higgs with his presentation ‘Sherlock Genomes: Detecting Outbreaks’, Jancy Johnson with ‘When a paper cut turns deadly …’, and Bridgette Duckworth who presented ‘Location, location, location: the neighbourhoods of our lymphnodes’ and took out the runner up spot.

In the final year of her PhD at the Walter and Eliza Institute of medial research, Bridgette Duckworth’s research focuses on enhancing immune protection against infection and cancer by tailoring the immune response towards specific therapeutic outcomes.

Bridgette has contributed to seven publications including a high impact first author paper in Nature Immunology, and recently received the 2021 International Cytokine & Interferon Society (ICIS) Sidney & Joan Pestka Graduate Award for her contributions to immunology research.

In her 3MT presentation – for which she was awarded a $2,000 grant – Bridgette discussed the ‘location, location, location’ of lymph nodes, and the importance of getting to know their neighbours. Watch her video presentation:

Congratulations to Kai Lyn Goh from the Department of Surgery in MDHS, who was awarded both the overall winner of the competition as well as the People’s Choice award for her presentation ‘Picture this: Insights to the future from inside the eyes’. Kai Lyn will go on to represent the University at the Asia-Pacific Virtual Competition.
