BBiomed Alumni inspire our students to start career thinking

Life gets exciting beyond the Bachelor of Biomedicine.

QUESTION - What does an optometrist, a physiotherapist, a senior research fellow,  a doctor, a psychiatrist, a medical student, a policy generalist, a speech pathologist, a consultant, a dentist and an associate director of eHealth all have in common?

ANSWER - A Bachelor of Biomedicine

BBiomed Alumni

On Tuesday 8 April, at the Melbourne Business School, our Bachelor of Biomedicine students welcomed a diverse group of Alumni who spoke candidly about their careers, career journey and offered advice, tips and feedback.

One thing is for certain, the event highlighted how studying the Bachelor of Biomedicine offers students pathways to some incredible career opportunities.

The room was full of Bachelor of Biomedicine students eager to meet 10 very impressive University of Melbourne Alumni.

The event was opened by Head, School of Biomedical Sciences, Professor Jennifer Wilkinson-Berka and Director of Education Professor Robyn Slattery, who both shared their career journey, their passion for translational health sciences, and the vast opportunities available to students through the University of Melbourne and Melbourne Biomedical Precinct partner organisations.

Students asked lots of questions, learning about the typical work-day for our Alumni, how important soft skills, networking and mentorships are, as well as memorable experiences and projects they have done along the way.

Students who attended were fascinated to learn that the Alumni ‘were all once confused about their career decisions and eventually found the right path’, and ‘the different pathways they have taken and how they are all enjoying their careers.’

94% of students said they found the event helpful for understanding their career options.

38% know exactly what their next move will be, and 50% said they 'sort-of' know.
