Our People

It's a pleasure to acknowledge our School Academic and Professional colleagues recently promoted, appointed to new or other roles, and welcoming new members to our School.

Congratulations to Professor Andrew Brooks appointed Head of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology; Professor Elizabeth Hartland as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Partnerships and External Relations); Professor Daniel Hoyer as Deputy Head of School; Academics promoted to Level C and a warm welcome to our new staff, Suzie Benson and Gillian Waters.

It is my greatest pleasure to announce the appointment of Professor Andrew Brooks as Head of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. Andrew is an outstanding immunologist of national and international reputation who has an interest in immune recognition strategies, in particular how immune cells discriminate healthy cells from those that are infected with viruses or are malignant.

Andrew obtained his PhD in Immunology at Flinders University in South Australia, prior to his post-doctoral training at the National Institutes of Health, USA where he developed an interest in receptors used by a subset of immune cells called Natural Killer (NK) cells.

Andrew has published over 150 papers in leading scientific journals such as Nature, Nature Immunology and Immunity and has been highly successful in obtaining competitive grants having had continuous funding in both NHMRC program and project schemes for over a decade.  His achievements cover many areas from basic to translational research.

Andrew is also a passionate educator devoted to the mentoring of young researchers and teaching activities of the department. His strong leadership qualities were very apparent in his role as Deputy Head of the Department.

I, and the senior team of the School of Biomedical Sciences are delighted to welcome Andrew as part of our executive. We are all very much looking forward to working with Andrew.

I hope you will all join me in congratulating Andrew.

Professor Elizabeth Hartland has taken up the role of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Partnerships and External Relations) as of August 2016 to January 2017.  Liz will relinquish her position as Head of Department but will continue her research in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology.  Liz is an outstanding researcher and has been a fantastic Head of Department.

Professor Daniel Hoyer, appointed Deputy Head, School of Biomedical Sciences from August, 2016.  I would like to acknowledge and thank Prof Janet Keast for her great support as Deputy Head of School from January 2016 to July 2016.
