STAFF MOVEMENTS:
It is my greatest pleasure to announce the appointment of Professor Andrew Brooks as Head of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. Andrew is an outstanding immunologist of national and international reputation who has an interest in immune recognition strategies, in particular how immune cells discriminate healthy cells from those that are infected with viruses or are malignant.
Andrew obtained his PhD in Immunology at Flinders University in South Australia, prior to his post-doctoral training at the National Institutes of Health, USA where he developed an interest in receptors used by a subset of immune cells called Natural Killer (NK) cells.
Andrew has published over 150 papers in leading scientific journals such as Nature, Nature Immunology and Immunity and has been highly successful in obtaining competitive grants having had continuous funding in both NHMRC program and project schemes for over a decade. His achievements cover many areas from basic to translational research.
Andrew is also a passionate educator devoted to the mentoring of young researchers and teaching activities of the department. His strong leadership qualities were very apparent in his role as Deputy Head of the Department.
I, and the senior team of the School of Biomedical Sciences are delighted to welcome Andrew as part of our executive. We are all very much looking forward to working with Andrew.
I hope you will all join me in congratulating Andrew.
