Grant success for SBS researchers

Congratulations to researchers across the School of Biomedical Sciences who have secured funding through the latest rounds of NHMRC Ideas Grants and ARC Discovery Projects.

Several researchers from across the School of Biomedical Sciences have successfully achieved grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and Australia Research Council (ARC) that will provide support for essential research projects.

The NHMRC Ideas Grants scheme aims to support innovation and creativity within all areas of health and medical research that address specific questions.

Importantly, funding is available for researchers at all stages in their careers, with specific opportunities for early- and mid-career researchers. The scheme also allows funding opportunities for research projects to be undertaken in conjunction with partner organisations.

The ARC Discovery Projects program has been established with a view to expand Australia’s national research capacity and knowledge base, and support research that produces economic, commercial, environmental, social and/or cultural benefits.

A main focus of the scheme is health research, which is outlined as one of the Australian Government’s nine science and research priorities. Other objectives of the Discovery Projects program include supporting excellence in basic and applied research, and encouraging national and international research collaboration.

Although both programs are highly competitive, the School of Biomedical Sciences has achieved success rates well above national averages. Sixteen per cent of School applicants secured NHMRC Ideas Grants funding, compared with the 11 per cent national average. Likewise, 28.9 percent successfully achieved ARC Discovery Projects funding, compared to the national average success rate of 23 per cent.

These grant outcomes are testament to the quality of our researchers and their commitment to continued research excellence. On behalf of the School, we congratulate the following researchers for these outstanding achievements.
