Phenomics Australia Histopathology and Digital Slide Service helps researchers across Australia in analysing histology images and data on genetically modified or treated experimental animals.
This service offers the latest in high quality capabilities including:
- Quality controlled mouse necropsies, tissue preparation and histological processing
- Pathological analysis of tissues
- Digital slide scanner capable of producing high quality images
- High resolution light microscopy with electronic image capture
- Specialised staining
Staff providing this service have extensive histology, diagnostic and electronic imaging experience. Consultant Medical and Veterinary Pathologists are available to provide expert advice.
The Histopathology and Digital Slide Service is based at the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience at the University of Melbourne and is supported by the Federal Government through the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) initiative and by the University of Melbourne.
The Histopathology and Digital Slide Service provides a secure interface where users can login and interrogate their case files and images.

Phenomics Australia Histopathology and Digital Slide Service specialises in:

We provide necropsy and histopathology services to all biomedical researchers across Australia for the evaluation of modified, treated or genetically engineered mice.
The specialist services provided are delivered by a team of experienced Medical and Veterinary pathologists and mouse pathobiologists implementing comprehensive necropsy and evaluation procedures.
Phenomics Australia has been named as an Associated Partner of PATHBIO, a Knowledge Alliance initiative that brings together 22 international universities, research institutions and companies, to build the framework for a European postgraduate degree in precision pathobiology for disease models. PATHBIO is supported by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union. The key contributors from APN to the PATHBIO initiative are Dr Patrick Sharp (Animal Resource Centre and Australian Phenome Bank), Prof Janet Keast (Histopathology Node, University of Melbourne) and Dr Michael Dobbie (CEO).

Histological investigation of mutant or treated experimental mice
This service provides a necropsy investigation, where 30 standard organs and tissues are histologically analysed. Special investigations can be ordered upon request.
3D Histech Pannoramic ScanII Scanner
This is a high resolution scanning device capable of imaging standard stained histological slides. Digital images can be interrogated by the client with the Case Viewer software https://www.3dhistech.com/software-downloads
(Note: software is only compatible with windows operating systems). Users have the option to either collect and copy their images or for a small fee access and view their images via the Case Center web interface
MetaSystems V-Slide Scanner
Is a microscope based slide scanning system with brightfield and fluorescence capture, generating digitised high resolution whole slide images. It is fitted with low and high power objectives including a 5x, 40x dry & 63x oil and has six channels capable of imaging DIC, DAPI, FITC, TR, Cy3 and Cy5.
Scanned images can be collected directly from the Scanner.
These scanners are part of Phenomics Australia and are also available to external users.
Digital images can be interrogated using VSViewer.
This is not compatible on a Mac operating system.

Clients have the option of Staff Service or unassisted scanning after undertaking a training session. This can be arranged with Tina Cardamone or Aira Nuguid.
