Professor Matthew Watt appointed as Professor and Head of Department of Physiology

The Head of School, Professor Fabienne Mackay, announced this morning that Professor Matthew Watt has been appointed as the next Professor and Head of the Department of Physiology, in the School of Biomedical Sciences.

Professor Watt leads an innovative research program that seeks to identify how defects of lipid metabolism and inter-tissue communication cause obesity-related disorders such as Type 2 Diabetes, and to use this information to discover novel targets that can be developed into innovative therapeutics.

Professor Watt is currently Professor of Physiology and a Senior Research Fellow of the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia. He has authored over 140 peer-reviewed manuscripts, given more than 70 International and National symposium presentations of his team's work and contributes to the discipline through his roles a reviewing editor of the American Journal of Physiology (Endocrinology & Metabolism), and editorial board member of the journal Diabetes. Professor Watt has received several awards in recognition of his work including the AK McIntyre Award from the Australian Physiological Society and the Postdoctoral Investigators Award from the National Association of Research Fellows (NARF).

In making the announcement, Professor Mackay took the opportunity to thank Professor Andrew Allen for his leadership in the past year as Head of Department. Professor Allen has generously offered to continue his position and assist with the transition as Professor Watt begins his role on 1 March 2018.
