Monday 24th - Tuesday 25th October 2016 

Annual Graduate Student Retreat

Place: Cammeray Waters Resort, 140 Taylor Rd, Woodend, Vic

What and why: We’d like invite you to register for the 2016 Graduate Retreat! Due to popular demand, we will be heading back to Cammaray Waters Resort in the Macedon Ranges. It will be held over Oct 24 (Mon) - Oct 25 (Tue), and the event is compulsory for 1st and 2nd year PhD students. Please register here and email your abstract (max 250 words) to bambiiatbio21@gmail.com by Friday Sep 30th. We are asking for a small contribution (students: $15, staff: $30), which will be used to provide fun social activities. You can pay in person to Autumn Bricker (Room 232A) or via bank transfer.

End of Year Honours Party

Place: Unknown Union, Level 1, 361 Little Lonsdale St Melbourne (meet at Bio21 foyer at 5pm if you wish to go as a group via tram)

What and why: With thesis submission on Monday 17th Oct and defence of thesis in early December, let's relax for a bit and enjoy a night off! This year's official EOY Honours party will be held at the gorgeous new venue Unknown Union, with some drinks and nibbles included in your super-cheap ticket price! Spots are limited, so get in quick to come and enjoy a night of freedom! Tickets are free for honours students (YAY!) and $10 for family, friends and Bio21 institute members. They include entry, several beverages and light nibbles on the night - what a bargain! Spots are limited. Reserve your place via the form here

BAMBII Social Club: Honours Edition

Place: L1 Cafe area

What and why: Future honours students will be descending upon us for a tour of the facilities, and would love to pick our brains about what research is actually like! So consider knocking off early (4pm - yay!) and joining us for a special edition of the BAMBII social night! Can't wait to see you all there!

Student Afternoon Tea: Renae Ryan

Place: Bio21 L1 Cafe Area

What and why: Join us for an informal chat with Associate Professor Renae Ryan from the University of Sydney! Renae undertook postdocs at both Columbia University and NIH in USA, before returning to Australia to run her own group. Her research "investigates molecular pumps that transport amino acids into cells and designs novel compounds that target these pumps to treat diseases such as chronic pain and cancer." Come along and ask questions about science, sanity and enjoy some delicious snacks!!!

Chocolate, Colouring and Camaraderie

Place: L2 South Meeting Room

What and why: We have dips, chips and hot chocolate galore! So come join us for a drop-in colouring-in event. We have colouring books for (ahem) "grown ups", lots of pencils, soy and dairy-full options, Lindt and Abundant Earth (Organic) hot chocolate, a plethora of marshmallows and a gap in the seminar schedule. So use your newly-acquired free time to drop in at your leisure for a little sweet break and snack!

WESA Presents: Inter-Institute Mixer at Pixel Alley

Place: Pixel Alley, 95 Smith St, Fitzroy

What and why: The wonderful team from WESA (Walter and Eliza Hall Institute Student Association) have organised an event at Pixel Alley, the retro-gaming bar in Fitzroy (under Mr Wow's Emporium)! Come network, relax, and play a few games like it's 1999!

Getting there: Any way you like! Or take the 55 tram towards the city to stop 5 (Bourke/Williams st), then hop on the 86 tram towards Bundoora RMIT to stop 15 (Smith/Gertrude st) - you're pretty much at the front door! :)

Inaugral 3MT Competition

Place: Bio21 Auditorium

What and why: Join us for Bio21's very first 3 minute thesis competition! Hosted by 3RRR's Shane Huntington and starring Bio21's best and brightest, contestants will have only 3 minutes to present the crux of their research and battle for cash-money prizes! There is also a door prize for the punters who come along, and I've been told the academics want us to be on our phones during the event.. to vote for our favourite! Afterwards we can celebrate their success at.

Student Afternoon Tea: Rob Parton

Place: Bio21 L1 Cafe Area

What and why: Ever wonder how the best of the best ended up where they did? Wonder highly succesful lab heads do outside of science to keep them sane? Want to expand your networks of academics? Or do you just fancy an afternoon sugar rush? UQ cell biologist Prof Rob Parton has kindly given us 30 mins for an informal Q&A session. Delicious afternoon snacks provided by Bio21, no lab heads will be present and I'll be there to chair the conversation (and if you'd like to ask a question but are a little nervous, you can email it through to me and I'll ask on the day, so you're welcome to just come by and listen). No need to RSVP, just pop it in your calendar and come down on the day.

What and why: Wanna Catch ‘Em All? Come to our BAMBII Pokemon Go walk-about! Meet in the foyer at 4:30 PM tomorrow. Once enough Pokemon have been caught we’ll head to the pub for food and refreshments (and a lure or two). Want to join later? No problem! Just drop us a message here and we'll let you know where we're at!

BAMBII Presents: Australia's Biggest Morning Tea Fundraiser

Place: Bio21 Atrium

What and why: Come have a free cuppa and enjoy the array of sweet, savoury, international and science-themed creations on display at this year's Biggest Morning Tea! Please support our bakers and a great cause by bringing coins to donate! Cakes and savouries to be supplied by Bio21 bakers – prizes will be awarded for best entries! Prizes have been generously donated by Avist, Dr Dax and Laneway Learning, and will be awarded to those judged best in their chosen category. Categories: Sweet, savoury, science-themed and international.
